News Recap for the Week of Jan. 7, 2019 – Jan. 13, 2019

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that three of the voice cast from the animated Justice League Unlimited will reunite for the upcoming Justice League vs. The Fatal Five animated movie.

While at the Golden Globes, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talked with MTV News saying director Adam McKay already has a working relationship with the studio and that he’s looking forward to discussing a Silver Surfer movie with McKay, who’s expressed a desire to make said Silver Surfer movie

Variety reported that Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) has signed on for an unspecified role in Legendary’s Dune reboot movie. The Dune reboot is being directed by acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve. Velleneuve directed 2016’s Arrival; and 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 whom Villeneuve worked with Bautista.

Variety reported Sony has hired screenwriter Kelly Marcel to return for Venom 2.

Per a report by the New York Times, Sony is considering animated tv shows based on characters from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Reportedly, British director S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, Orange is the New Black, & Dexter) has been chosen to direct the pilot of the Game of Thrones prequel. EW has reported that a number of actors have joined the series as well, including Naomi Watts.

Paramount Pictures has decided not to move forward with Star Trek 4, shelving the project entirely, at least for now.

DC Animation to turn Superman: Red Son into a film. Red Son is a DC comic story that depicted what would’ve happened if Kal-El had crashed landed in the Soviet Union instead of Smallville.

CinemaBlend reported that Marvel producer Jonathan Schwartz confirmed there have been discussions behind the scenes about the possibility of adapting Secret Invasion, the Marvel comic book crossover storyline from 2008. Secret Invasion involved an invasion of Earth by alien shapeshifters known as the Skrulls. The Skrulls are to be featured heavily in the upcoming Marvel movie Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel arrives in theaters March 8, 2019.

Deadline reported that producer/writer Geoff Johns (story writer of 2018’s Aquaman) is working on a script to reinvent Green Lantern

The Disney channel is renewing Star Wars Resistance for a second season.

Stellan Skarsgard (Thor, The Avengers, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote) has joined the cast of Dune as Villain Baron Harkonnen.

Captain Marvel screenplay writer Jac Schaeffer has been hired as showrunner for the upcoming Disney streaming service’s series Vision and the Scarlet Witch.

First reviews came in for M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” and critics were not happy, with some calling it “a letdown (USA Today), and IndieWire calling Glass Shyamalan’s biggest disappointment of his career. Glass opens in theaters January 18, 2019.

MIB International writers Marcum and Holloway have been hired by Mattel and Sony Pictures to write the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe reboot.

A new trailer for Alita Battle Angel was released, this time featuring James Cameron advising fans that the best way to experience the cutting-edge science-fiction movie is on a big screen with the best possible sound. Altia Battle Angel hits theaters February 14, 2019.

Discussing Film reported that Jaimie Alexander’s Lady Sif, Asguardian warrior friend of Thor, is getting her own TV series and is said to be in early development.

A report from Film Journo Daniel Richtman on the 20th Century Fox/Disney merger, indicates that development of previously proposed Marvel films at Fox is ending. Both Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, however, are still going to be released this year.
